Real Madrid handed first Spanish League defeat

AFP - 4 octubre 2009 19:40

Sporting Gijon´s midfielder Miguel de las Cuevas (3rd L) is congratulated by teammate defender Ayoze Diaz (2nd L) after scoring his team´s second goal during a Spanish league football match against Mallorca at the Molinon stadium in Gijon. Gijon won 4-1.

MADRID (AFP) - Real Madrid's "Galacticos" crashed to their first defeat of the season losing 2-1 at title rivals Sevilla on Sunday as Barcelona opened a three-point lead at the summit.

Real were aiming to make it a perfect six wins and join Barcelona on maximum points but instead Sevilla underlined their own credentials with a fifth straight win to move level on points with Real.

Sevilla were good value for the win and could have won more convincingly had it not been for Real goalkeeper Iker Casillas.

Jesus Navas headed Sevilla ahead on 33 minutes and the hosts should have scored more but for two wonder saves from Casillas.

Pepe headed home a fortunate equaliser on 49 minutes from a set-piece before Brazilian Renato netted with yet another header after 66 minutes following a great ball from the impressive Navas.

It was a first defeat for Real boss Manuel Pellegrini who had won all seven of his matches in charge at home and abroad.

Real and Sevilla both trail Barcelona by three points after the champions beat Almeria 1-0 on Saturday for a sixth successive league win, matching a club record set in 1991 and 1998.

Real had lost Cristiano Ronaldo, scorer of five league goals already this season, to an ankle injury so captain Raul came in.

Sevilla fielded Real old boy Alvaro Negredo who had a point to prove after Madrid sold him for 15 million euros in the summer.

The hosts bombarded Real with crosses and should have scored in the fourth minute but Abdoulay Konko failed with a header.

Sevilla got the goal they merited on 33 minutes with Fernando Navarro clipping a cross in and Navas took advantage of Marcelo's lack of awareness to bullet in a header.

With half-time approaching Casillas pulled off a miraculous save to stop a header from Renato.

It stopped Sevilla going into the break with a psychological two-goal cushion and Casillas pulled off another unbelievable reflex save from Diego Perotti 90 seconds into the second half.

Sevilla should have been 3-0 up but Real made them pay with Pepe heading a 49th minute equaliser after some woeful defending.

The goal lifted Real who came back into the game but Renato glanced in a header on 66 minutes to deflate Casillas and Madrid.

In other matches, Serbian striker Nikola Zigic came back to haunt old club Racing Santander, coming off the bench to score a 60th-minute winner as Valencia won 1-0 at El Sardinero.

Zigic replaced the injured David Villa on 56 minutes and took just four minutes to make an impact and push Valencia up to fifth.

Zigic scored 13 goals in 19 games on loan at Racing last season and did not celebrate the goal out of respect for the Racing fans.

It was a first win in four for Valencia although the injury to top-scorer Villa is a concern.

Villa limped off holding his hamstring and is likely to miss Spain's 2010 World Cup qualifier against Armenia next Saturday although the European champions have already qualified for the finals.

Elsewhere, Villarreal and their new coach Ernesto Valverde were still waiting for their first win of the season after a frustrating 0-0 draw with 10-man Espanyol.

"It is a bad situation and we can't hide that," admitted Valverde. "We have to be patient and keep our heads up.

"There is a long break now (due to international games) which is difficult but we can use these days to work hard and improve."

Despite their opponents being a man short for three-quarters of the match, goal-shy Villarreal could not score and were jeered by fans at El Madrigal.

Runners-up in the league just two seasons ago, Villarreal have just three points from a possible 18 and sit second from bottom of the table with their pre-season Champions League target looking a long way away.

Real Madrid have the players but i guess they dont have THE coach. Casillas proved hes the best goalkeeper in the world right now..Sevilla was the best team. lots of work to do if Real wants to win titles.

Red4ever, no team can win them all. I hope you don't expect Real Madrid to win all the games they play. In case you're not aware of it, there are other teams out there.

Today my favorite teams didn't do very well, AC MIlan, Real Madri, Manchester United and Celtic all stumbled.

Tonto, i understand that no team is perfect everyone loose once in a while but this game was the first BIG game for Real and they should have done better wit the players they have..if wasnt for Casillas they would be crashed.

Few months ago we beat the same Sevilla at their ground 4-2 , but yesterday they were more motivated to beat the most expensive team in the world . That's what Pellegrini is facing every week with a team who played only 2 months together . Sevilla scored again from a corner and that's one thing I still don't understand why everytime opponents get a corner it's a real danger if it's not a goal . Gago and Ronaldo could make it different yesterday , and Pellegrini must forget starting with Raul that's not a good idea at all , Higuain should be lined from the begining , Pepe and Ramos should stay behind and not take risks always to go often front except during set pieces . He has two weeks break now to fix some weak points before they meet Valladolid and Milan at home , and has to wish that Barcelona lose at Valencia next game .

PS.Alboi , if you just understood what you copied from other forums you would not paste it here . I know you never gave your own opinion but you love to copy-paste to make a place between others . Too cheap mate .

Ronaldo injured!

Does that make Real a one man team, I don’t personally thinks so but the very same label was being applied to his previous employers by people on here at the same stage of last season.

Just a thought!

Newtonheath1878,

I know you don't like Real Madrid. But, Real Madrid is definitely NOT one man team. Sevilla played extremely well yesterday and deserved to win. Sevilla would beat any team with their yesterday's performance.

I don't understand how Raul finds a space in this team. Marcelo was the worst player on the pitch and slaughtered by Sevilla. However, Marcelo is still young and can improve his skills. But Raul has no hope....

Higuain is much more better player than Raul, and proved it when he came in at 53rd minute.

Bearing in mind, there is no team that unbeatable YET....

Newty , Sevilla is not Sunderland if you think they are easy to beat (well uou didn't even beat them with your players who played many years together , our have been 2 months only)

We are not a one man team , the best choice yesterday was to play the guys who few months ago beat them at home 4-2 , at least use Higuain and Granero at the begining , I am sure Pellegrini will say something about his yesterday's choices tonight . But of course Ronaldo and Gago could make the difference , Cristiano is the ideal actually to penetrate such defenses when others tried with tactical ways which doesn't work always.

But remember Sevilla were the favourite since we know how strong they are this season but that's not the case with Sunderland. And as avi said Marcelo sucked this time but he is still young !

Holly,

I understand my Spanish has a lot of mistakes but I can assure you there is no copy and paste going on there. I am studying Spanish right now at the university after studying it in high school. Still I know I make a lot of mistakes, but when I go to Seville I can assure you my Spanish will be 3 times better than your English will ever be. So please don't insult my Spanish as I have never insulted your English. That "mate" was cheap.

To be honest with you I don’t really dislike Real, I don’t agree with how they go about their business but I don’t dislike them, for crying out loud I’m a thirty something husband and father, I have much better things to do with my time than dislike a football club. Now if we were talking about holly then… well that’s for another time I think.

My comment, if read correctly, quite clearing states I am not of that opinion. It was a statement to show how ludicrous others statements have been in the past.

By the way holly we didn’t lose to Sunderland, your lot did lose to Sevilla. First proper test and failed, in my opinion. So what is it holly, answer number….

1.“(well uou didn't even beat them with your players who played many years together , our have been 2 months only)”

or

2.“the best choice yesterday was to play the guys who few months ago beat them at home 4-2”

Me thinks there is a little bit of a contradiction in terms, how’s about you?

And if you think that teams have up the ante against Madrid this season then my suspicions about you are not far from the truth, teams like United, Real, Bayern, Milan & Celtic have had to endure teams upping the ante for decades as it is like a cup final when they play against the giants of the game!

Don't pass judgment on Pellegrini. That's the problem with Real never having time to become a team: constantly changing coaches, and so styles, etc.

Pelligrini also wanted to keep Robben and Snejder. Especially Robben put in in the 2nd half would have added a burst of speed needed. Not that Real would have necessarily won. Anyway, give them time. How long? Well, one whole season is how long it can take. Of course, Real fans won't allow that, so next year we can have the same discussion.

We are football supporters. We love to watch our teams as well as we love to discuss and criticize our teams, players, managers, chairmen etc. That is nothing wrong with it. Real Madrid always changes its squad and transfers new players. This is another reason makes Real Madrid is the most popular football team.

They lost their first strong challenge. Is this an end? I do not think so. They still got the strongest squad all over the world. Sevilla lost would be positive for them. They know now that if they don’t play well, they will lose. They are not unbeatable.

Next year, surely, Real Madrid will transfer more players even though they will win the La Liga and Champions League. And they should.

Newtonheath,

You were right. I misunderstood your post due to my poor English. Apologise. Maybe I misunderstand you again regarding disliking another team. But still I would like to point out that it is very normal to dislike another team. Surely, you must dislike FC Liverpool or Man City if you are Man Utd supporter. You were (most of the times) very modest to be honest. So please do not be pompous and say “I have much better things to do with my time than dislike a football club”. We are all bullshitting (maybe, most of us) here, and believe me everybody has more important things to do than disliking other teams etc.

6 octubre 2009 00:39

Avi82, I agree with you (Now that's something strange) even though you're giving my friend (Newtonheath) a bit of a lesson on psychology. It's true that we can praise any team when they deserve it and criticize them, without malice, when they don’t play well. Lately I’ve even been very critical of my AC Milan. At the moment they are very weak. That’s a fact. To say otherwise would be foolish by my part.

PS. Yesterday I phoned my sister in Italy. She told me that Berlusconi, being Italy’s Prime Minister, is somewhat reluctant to spend money on his team at a time when the country is going through a recession. I'm sure that later on Berlusconi will spend some money to improve AC Milan.

Newty said "I don’t really dislike Real,I don’t agree with how they go about their business"

I think you can critisize our football style if it's too offensive and old style like Capello said , but talking about our business how it is run that's complete non-sense . Our business is one thing which kept us a PEOPLE's club and not a one MAN's club , I can't really explain to you as you don't realize how it's important for a fan like me to keep a club for members and not being owned by any 1 person alone . I know it would make you more than happy if Glazer gives back your club to the MEMBERS but your problem is that you cannot recognize some things , Madrid has the best system actually in the world and that's my opinion , at least comparing to Barcelona where politicians and independentists run the club and use it to promote not only their culture but to succeed someday to some silly idea of independance . But what Madrid are doing is just for football and nothing else , and I will never accept that it becomes a private family firm like ManU .

I apologise if you perceived my comment as pompous but rest assured it was never meant to be. Yes, it is normal for people to dislike teams but normal doesn’t necessarily make something right. I love United but I don’t dislike other teams, without other teams there would be no United. As Fred has stated, one can be critical of something but that doesn’t mean one dislikes the whole package, for example, my son can misbehave and I can be critical or even “dislike” his actions but I don’t dislike my son as a whole. The bottom line is that football is a game, if United win then yes I’m elated if we lose then I move on. I have been round the block too many times in my life to start disliking something or someone just because they may have beaten me at a game. In reality have these other clubs offended me if they have beaten me, no of course not, have they dented my pride, well maybe in the past but as I have grown older and (I like to think) a little wiser I have come to realise that pride is a very dangerous trait to hold onto. If I state that I dislike “someone” then the source of that dislike is much deeper than that of a game, there are billions of people on this planet and unfortunately it is very difficult for everyone to get along, it would be a nice thing but sadly there are people who need to learn a little manners before we start heading towards that level!

Holly,

If I state that I do not like how Madrid goes about their business then that is my opinion, if you don’t understand how that can be then read above.

And you still haven’t answered number one or number two, which was it? Forever avoiding the subject!

6 octubre 2009 15:19

Newty , both points are right . How can you expect a team who played only 2 months together to beat a strong team like Sevilla when the players of ManU who played many years together couldn't beat a team like Sunderland ?

My best choice was to rest Raul and Benzema and line up from the start Granero and Higuain , they could kick that Sevilla with Kaka behind .

newtonheath1878

6 octubre 2009 16:04

And as I said that is a contradiction in terms, and we didn’t get beat!
