PARIS (AFP) - Aberdeen crushed Celtic's dreams of a league and cup double with a surprise 1-0 victory in their Scottish Cup quarter-final in Glasgow on Tuesday.
Despite the Parkhead side dominating the replay, Darren Mackie scored the only goal of the game in the 69th minute to set up a semi-final clash with first division Queen of the South. And in a night of surprises in the Cup, first division St Johnstone won 3-1 away to Scottish Premier League side St Mirren in their replay. They will now take on either Rangers or Partick Thistle who play at Ibrox on Wednesday. In the first game between Celtic and Aberdeen at Pittodrie, the Glasgow side had required an injury-time equaliser to secure the replay - Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink cancelling out fellow Dutch player Jeffery de Visscher's opener. Dons manager Jimmy Calderwood admitted he had expected the Glasgow giants to pull off another late escape in the replay but praised his players for standing firm. He said: "In injury time Celtic got a corner and I turned to my assistant Jimmy Nicholl and said 'the same thing's going to happen.' But we managed to escape this time and it's a fabulous result. "We've taken a lot of stick this season but we've had a lot of injuries to contend with. Darren Mackie has been out for three weeks but he came in tonight and his work-rate was phenomenal. He had one chance all night which he took. "In the Scottish League Cup semi final against Dundee United we were very poor so hopefully this time we'll make the most of the opportunity." Celtic manager Gordon Strachan could not believe his side had been knocked out. He said: "We created far more chances than Aberdeen and had enough opportunities to win several games but we're out of the cup. "They had two chances which came from a mistake by us and from a corner kick but fortune favours the brave and Aberdeen defended bravely. "Aberdeen are in the semi-finals and we wish them luck but I think we're very unlucky not to still be in the competition." In Tuesday's match Celtic controlled the play throughout the match without over-working Aberdeen goalkeeper Derek Soutar. Vennegoor of Hesselink wasted a great chance to put Celtic in front in the 22nd minute. Japanese international Shunsuke Nakamura's perfectly-weighted chip put the big striker clean through on goal but his attempted volley floated harmlessly over. Australian striker Scott McDonald, with 25 goals to his name this season, should have opened the scoring for the Parkhead side in the 39th minute. Vennegoor of Hesselink's back-heel created the chance for Celtic's top goalscorer but his left-foot shot from 10-yards curled past the wrong side of the post. On the stroke of half time Aberdeen were nearly gifted the lead. Celtic captain Stephen McManus' careless pass-back rolled into the path of the Dons' Richard Foster but Polish goalkeeper Artur Boruc was quick off his line to save at his feet. Although Celtic continued to control the match in the second half it was Aberdeen who made the breakthrough with their first shot on target in the 69th minute. Vennegoor of Hesselink headed a Barry Nicholson corner out of the penalty box but former Celtic captain Jackie McNamara headed the ball back into the danger zone where Lee Miller knocked it into the path of Mackie and he fired it low past Boruc from eight-yards. Despite Celtic upping their pace they could not force a dramatic late equaliser and the Dons hung on to book their place in the semi final against Queen of the South. |
