MADRID (AFP) - Real Madrid's iconic former striker Alfredo di Stefano leads an online poll to pick the 100 best players in Real Madrid's history, the Spanish club said Monday.

Di Stefano, who played for the club from 1953-63 after beginning his career with Argentinian outfit River Plate, has gathered 11,553 votes, just 66 more than France's Zinedine Zidane who retired from football in 2006 after five seasons with Real.

Real captain Raul Gonzalez, the all-time leader top scorer in the Champions League with 61 goals, is in third place with 11,060 votes.

A total of 391,815 votes have been cast since the poll began on March 6. It will end on March 28 at midnight.

A two-time European Player of the Year, Argentinian-born Di Stefano scored 418 goals in 510 games for Real Madrid.

Last month the defending Spanish champions and league leaders unveiled a statue of the 81-year-old -- Real's honorary president -- at the club's training ground. Di Stefano became a Spanish citizen in 1956.
