LONDON (AFP) - Chelsea said Tuesday they had rejected an approach from Inter Milan aimed at securing the transfer of England midfielder Frank Lampard to the Italian champions.

The English club said in a statement that they would not consider a transfer of the 30-year-old, who has less than a year on his contract left and has been linked to a possible reunion with former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, now in charge of Inter.

"Chelsea FC can confirm it has received an official approach from Internazionale to discuss the possible transfer of Frank Lampard," the statement said. "Contrary to reports, no financial offer was made."

"Chelsea FC has informed Inter this morning that we will not enter into any discussions regarding the transfer of Frank Lampard."

New Chelsea boss Luiz Felipe Scolari was due to give his first press conference as the club's manager from 1200 GMT on Tuesday with the future of Lampard and want-away striker Didier Drogba set to top the agenda.

Lampard is reported to be tempted by the prospect of rejoining Mourinho, to whom he was close during the Portuguese coach's three years in charge at Stamford Bridge.

But his public statements have always stressed a desire to end his career at Chelsea and he was grateful for the support he received from the club when his mother became ill and died at the end of last season.

Chelsea's purchase of Deco from Barcelona last month has added to the uncertainty over Lampard's future with Scolari now able to call on three attack-minded central midfielders -- Deco, Lampard and Michael Ballack.

The way that things are going, I don't think that we'll see any major moves, anytime between now and when the market closes, at the end of August.
I think that most of the rumours are nothing but a lot of nonsense created by the media.

I don't know giorgio , I hope you're not right about this ,because we need some god players to win the champions league
Forza INTER

real madrid is very quiet this summer. i wonder what is going on, england and italy have been moving, but not a lot of movement in spain.

Giorgio July 8th, 2008 16:38

Limpisty,
Are you Italian ? I would suggest that you update your profile, by including some data about you, where you live, etc., so we all know more about you.
Soccerway is like some kind of friendly (sometimes) soccer venue and I think it's nice that we all know each other better !!

Giorgio, with all the foes we have, wee can sure use some support from those unknown Italian supportes in Italy and abroad!. I'm not sure that limpisty is Italian, though he likes Inter.

inter has a ton of midfielders already. so lampard wont add much im sorry. he is very overrated i feel. and he is about to be 30. whats with the italians and all these old heads? sorry Gio!

Guuner66,
Thirty is a good age for a soccer player. He's still young enough and he's got the experience.
After Spain won Euro 2008 with a young team, everybody has been climbing on the band-wagon, praising the virtues of under-25 soccer players. I think a lot of these people will end up eating their own words.
Let's not forget that Arsenal choked, with a team of young players, this past season, because, at the end of the day, there is no substitute for experience.

Guuner66 July 8th, 2008 18:53

you may be right bout experience but being real aresenal choked because they had no depth on the bench. experience really had nothing to do with it. they just had way too many injuries. 30 is ok but at the end i mean how many good seasons are u going to get out of a 30 year old player as opposed to say a 24 year old player. young is always better my friend....

Too english to fit in italian football. And they have Cambiasso already who miles above lampard. As for youth vs experience I'd like to remind you of Ajax '96-'96-won the CL, played the final next year with exclusively homegrown kids. Average age of the team was below 25. On the other hand Milan won the CL too with a team of around 30+. I'd personally opt for the younger solution.
