PRAGUE (AFP) - Spurs take a one goal lead back to London but could have wrapped up their UEFA Cup last 32 encounter against Slavia Prague if they had not squandered first half chance chances and sat back in the second half.
Spurs looked comfortable with a two-goal first half lead against a lacklustre Slavia but almost let the hosts back in the game after the interval. Dimitar Berbatov put Spurs ahead with their first real attack in the fourth minute, picking the ball up outside the penalty area and slotting it into the corner with Slavia keeper Martin Vaniak and players looking on. Robbie Keane made it two for Spurs on the half hour after he was picked out in space behind a flat Slavia defence and was left a simple finish. Former Slavia keeper, Radek Cerny was hardly bothered on his homecoming by any shots on target. Jaroslav Cerny offered the best chance of getting the home side back into the game when he shot over after 21 minutes. Berbatov could have made it three just before the break but Vaniak made two superb saves in quick succession from close range. Slavia came out fighting in the second half. After a handful of half-chances, it was a blunder by Cerny in the Spurs goal that let them back in the game after 69 minutes. Cerny fumbled a high cross while under pressure from the towering David Strihavka who stabbed the ball in the net. The home team could have levelled the match with five minutes remaining when Erich Brabec hit the woodwork from a sweetly taken corner by Cerny. "I think we controlled the match in the first hour but then we became quite nervous. We should have achieved a better result," said Spurs manager Jaunde Ramos. He refused to blame Cerny for his mistake. "Mistakes are made on the football field. Today it was the turn of Cerny, but we should not dwell on it." Slavia coach Karel Jarolim said Spurs' early goals destroyed their strategy of dominating the midfield. "It created a lot of nervousness. We lost that nervousness because we had nothing to lose. If we had more luck we could have drawn the match." |
