ZEIST, May 27 (SW) - Saestum could not afford to lose any points in the last match of the season. With Ter Leede trailing by two points and expected to have an easy win over the already relegated Buitenveldert, the Zeister team could feel the pressure. But Saestum had no trouble dealing with the circumstances and proved to be the deserved champion. It beat SteDoCo with convincingly play 5-0.
It was Gilanne Louwaars who let of the tension for the now seven-times Dutch Champs. With a beautiful flying volley she surprised SteDoCo-goalkeeper Brouwer and put the relieving 1-0 on the scoreboard. After a somewhat poorer faze Saestum showed the over 250 spectators why they are Holland’s best. With fluent combinations and nice wing play by especially with Nangila van Eijck, the reds left SteDoCo no chance whatsoever. The number nine was over classed and had great difficulty with the attacks of reigning Champion. Whereas the Saestum-defense never had any trouble handling the SteDoCo strikers and put on a solid performance.
The goals by Shirley Smith, Lisanne Vermeulen, Nangila van Eijck and another by Gilanne Louwaars where all the result off great tactical Saestum play and appear to be a good basis for further European experiences.
The European matches in the beginning of this season almost cost Saestum the title because the team had trouble focusing on both competitions. Many points where lost in the starting faze of the competition and they needed a 17 game winning streak to make up for the poor first competition results.
The troubled start does not hinder the ambitious intentions for next years European Cup matches. Saestum survived the first round of the UEFA-cup this year and hopes to equal that result, or do even better. Whether those dreams will become reality have to be seen. Saestum achieved the main goal for 2005/06, by winning the silver Championship shield. And they rightly did so.
