The stadium was completed ahead of schedule in December 2004. The stadium is host to Hannover 96 in the Bundesliga and has been their home ground since 1959.

The overhanging roof has been constructed from an ultra–violet permeable foil which assists in keeping the playing surface in perfect condition by ensuring that the correct amount of light is transmitted to the grass. The lighting for this stadium have been mounted in the roof.

Two forty-one square metre LED video walls provide the spectators with all the match information as well as entertainment during the periods when football is not being played.
