ROME, Nov 10 (SW) – The Italian press has slated the Italian Cup by saying that interest in the competition has shown a recent rapid decline.

Most newspapers are of the opinion that if interest is so poor then it would be better to abolish it altogether.

This come only days after it was revealed that the average attendance at Serie A matches for the season thus far is below 20 000.

Only 1 833 fans turned up at the San Siro to watch AC Milan win 4 – 2 against Brescia.

The Italian Cup has lost its glamour somewhat as the bigger clubs opt to send out reserve players in an effort to rest their stars for the more prestigious Serie A and Champions League fixtures.

The newspapers compared the attendances in Italy to the 55 000 that turned up to watch Real Madrid beat Ecija in the Spanish Cup or the crowd that attended the Chelsea versus Aston Villa League Cup that reached 41 000.

The best Italian attendance came when Messina took on Inter Milan at home. Here the crowd reached 16 123.

Poor stadium facilities and crowd hooliganism has also had a part to play.
