BIRMINGHAM, Jan 31 (SW) - D.J. Campbell's quick run to fame in English football hit its peak on Tuesday as Birmingham City signed the striker on an initial £500,000 deal from League One side Brentford.

Depending on his success, the deal for the 24-year-old Campbell could reach as much as £1 million. Impressive for a man who has only played 22 league football games in his career.

After making a name for himself during non-league Yeading's great FA Cup run last season, Brentford snatched the player for £5,000 in June of last year.

He scored nearly over 80 goals in more than 100 games for Yeading and then hit the back of the net 12 times this year for Brentford including the double in the FA Cup win over Sunderland.

Birimgham City boss Steve Bruce is desperate for any scoring help that could keep the Blues above water and help them avoid relegation at the end of the season.
