TEPLICE, Sep 15 (SW) - There were mixed results for Spanish sides in the first leg of the 2005/06 UEFA Cup first round on Thursday as Espanyol were held by Teplice and Osasuna were beaten away to Rennes.
Teplice - Espanyol 1-1 It was Czech Republic side Teplice that drew first blood against the Catalan side as Tomas Jirsak put the home side in front three minutes after the second half restart. Teplice were on course for a first-leg win but Luís García's goal with eight minutes to play gave Espanyol a crucial away goal heading into the second leg. Rennes - Osasuna 3-1 Runners-up in the Copa del Rey, Osasuna, were not so fortunate as they were defeated by French side Rennes on Thursday. Alexander Frei put the home side in front on 27 minutes, but Savo Milosevic pulled the Spaniards level six minutes after the second half began. Frei's second goal of the match with 15 minutes to play gave Rennes a 2-1 lead and they got an insurance goal from Youssef Hadji in the 83rd minute to give them a little breathing room for the return leg in Pamplona. Sevilla - Mainz 0-0 Mainz, who are bottom of the Bundesliga, got a good result on Thursday earning a goalless draw away to favored Sevilla in the UEFA Cup. Mainz have no points from their first four Bundesliga matches and will be thrilled to go back to Germany for the second leg having not given up a goal. |
